La Legge del Signore è quella che segue pedissequamente una famigllia di quaccheri dell’Indiana anche se le tentazioni per trasgredire sono molte. Ma la loro fede è davvero così ferma? Siamo nel 1862.
C’è la voglia di andare al fronte per combattere contro i Sudisti contavvenendo i precetti della fede.
C’è la voglia di vincere la corsa con il calessino con il vicino di casa per arrivare primo a messa la domenica.
C’è la voglia di fare musica e di passare del tempo a suonare la pianola.
C’è la voglia di picchiare una oca esuberante, colpevole di catalizzare le attenzioni di una mamma.
C’è la voglia di andare al fronte, brandendo un’arma per recuperare il figlio.
C’è la voglia di uccidere il nemico e acquisire la consapevolezza di quanto è sbagliato.
C’è la voglia di difendere la propria terra, brandendoo una scopa e attaccando i nemico alla porta.
C’è tutto questo, ecco perché vale la pena vederlo.

Quanto sono quaccheri i quaccheri? Quanto vogliono veramente seguire la legge del Signore oppure la seguono solo perché essendo nati quaccheri non possono fare altro?
Copia di questo film venne regalata dal Presidente Reagan a Gorbaciov in risposta alla sua frase di quest’ultimo: “The only way to resolve differences is to understand them”:
There’s one gift in particular that I wanted to mention not only in view of my own former profession but because it has, I think, something important to say to us about what is underway this week in Moscow. It is a film, not as well-known as some but an American classic. It is a powerfully acted and directed story of family and romantic love, of devotion to the land and dedication to higher principle. It is also fun, it has humor. There’s a renegade goose, a mischievous young boy, a noisy neighbor, a love-struck teenager in love with a gallant soldier, an adolescent struggling for manhood, a loving, highly principled wife, and a gentle but strong father. It’s about the good and sometimes difficult things that happen between man and wife, and parent and child. The film also has sweep and majesty and power and pathos. For you see, it takes place against the backdrop of our American epic, the Civil War. And because the family is of the Quaker religion and renounces violence, each of its characters must, in his or her own way, face this war and the moral dilemma it poses. The film shows not just the tragedy of war, but the problems of pacifism, the nobility of patriotism, as well as the love of peace.

Plurinominato agli Oscar, senza vincerne uno, il film è entrato immediatamente nel mio cuore.
Lo sceneggiatore all’epoca non era stato accreditato essendo presente nella famigerata lista nera d Hollywood.
